IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #2

 

            Scholastic (https://www.scholastic.com/) is a website that is actually the world’s biggest publishing and contributor for children’s book. It has reading materials available for ages of 5 to 18. It is a great site for a parent and teacher to select preferred reading age material for a child or the student. This site provides a lot of support for enhancing reading skills so teachers and parents can find printable materials and lesson plans. One fun fact about Scholastic is that it is the one that published the series of Harry Potter.

            In order to have direct access to Scholastic, one must register. Once you register, you have full access on the websites and you can join a Book Club or purchasing books that will benefit the student.  Being a member to Scholastic, one benefit as a parent or teacher is that there is a teaching tool that is beneficial during this pandemic. One can stay home and have access to free resources to keep the young children’s mind in active state of reading.

            Scholastic is like any other a website that provides reading materials to children in order to increase their imagination and most importantly to enhance their reading skills. According to one of its phrase, “reading open minds”.

Rivera IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #7   Flocabulary ( www.flocabulary.com ) is a very useful tool and a teacher friendly platform with numerous short videos that can help teachers teach current events and historical topics. With each videos, it has remarkable graphics along with upbeat songs that allows teaching more fun. To sign up, you can easily go to the website and create a username by entering your email address. This website has a free trial, and you can also pay for subscription that cost $67 a year for more videos for your students. Using the platform, Flocabulary, you can easily find videos that matches your classroom lessons that can be exciting and fun for the students. Teachers using Flocabulary videos have used in their reviews, where the students watch videos after learning about a certain topic and completing interactive lyrics worksheets.   International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project:  Effective Literacy Website #5 Story Place: The Children’s Digital Learning Library is an online literacy platform that focuses on building literacy for children in Preschool. This site offers digital storybooks that are animated. When you click into one of the stories, you will see a few expansion activities below. There are online activities for children to do as well as hands-on crafting activities that have printable templates for teachers or parents.  Included are videos that relate to concepts or ideas learned in the storybook. These videos are used to expand upon ideas learned in the story. Under each story, there is a reading list that relates to the theme of the story.
