ILA Newsletter Project #7: Effective Literacy Website “Bookshare”

Bookshare is an effective literacy website that leads a great way of reading for learners with reading barriers. Students needing special care may develop reading skills like regular classroom students given the right tools and reading materials. Bookshare literacy website makes reading much easier. People with dyslexia, blindness, cerebral palsy, and other reading barriers can customize their learning to suite their learning styles. Learners with reading barriers may virtually find any book they need for school, work, or reading enjoyment. I believe the effectiveness on the website is mostly on its focus to special needs students. Sometimes we forget to include the learning accommodations for these important students. The site provides various tools that can accommodate necessities for students with special needs.

Since the program is designed to help students with special needs, US students who are in the special needs programs may use Bookshare for free. However, non-US citizens who need special care may also use Bookshare paying a very little amount for membership fee. When accessed, learners may find tons of useful reading materials suitable to any kind of disability. Another great tool on the website is customizing of activities. Teachers and care takers may customize reading books and materials to fit students’ needs. That makes teachers and care takers time for preparing less and more time for the instruction and for learning to take place. This websites reminds us that all students can learn given the right instructional tools.

The tools provided on the website were most from donations and volunteer work from other people. There is a part on the site where people may involve in getting the reading materials ready for the users. With people involving in the preparations of instructional tools from day to day, the options students have available on their plates. I find this last website the best for many of the ones that I reviewed before touched a little on accommodations and there were some that did not mention anything on special learners. I personally want to get more information on this site as I have a blind student in my classroom. He is very intelligent the tools this website provides will be of great impact to him and his future!
