ILA Newsletter Project #6: Effective Literacy Website “Flocabulary”

Flocabulary is a learning program suitable for all grade levels. This website focuses on building vocabulary words for students across the curriculum. It integrates learning hip-hop songs for engagement and increase achievements. The website also offered standard- based videos, instructional activities, and students’ creativity tools to supplement instruction and core literacy skills. Users of this website will find instructional supplement across all subject areas that will enrich lessons for more fruitful outcomes. There is a free trail on the website which all educators may access to find resourceful instructional packs in terms of videos, fun learning activities and songs. These resources are to help students with lessons to learn and mainly to support students with their vocabulary understanding. Obviously, when students are rich in vocabularies, learning experiences will be easy in terms of fully demonstrating understanding, expressing reasonable ideas, and applying learned skills in their daily lives.

The website uses the terms Word Up as the method for increasing students understanding of vocabulary words. Word Up comes in different grade levels that are classroom friendly across grade levels. These activities provided in Word Up make the lesson interesting and engaging for students as they go through the instructional process. It adds more to the lesson making it interesting for learners to part take in the lesson and learn eventually. The website’s effectiveness is proven to increase vocabulary proficiency and raise scores in state reading tests.

The resources provided on the site are effective in the difficulty of how each activity is planned. These activities move students through all the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy starting from the easier skills up to the more complex skills. Activities are provided in different difficulty levels following the pyramids from where students may remember what they learn. Then its goes on to where students can show understanding of what is learned. There were learning activities provided that address the higher levels of cognitions where students have to apply, analyze and create such things to show that learning has taken place in an individual. Flocabulary website is an effective one to increase vocabulary for students in all grade levels. With great and fun activities inspiring students, they can and will reach their full potentials.
