Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #5
Into
the Book (https://reading.ecb.org/index.html)
is a website that focuses on eight reading-comprehension strategies: prior
knowledge, making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring,
summarizing, evaluating, and synthesizing. The activities and resources are
geared more towards elementary students, but a teacher can adjust it for
secondary students. There are two areas the website provides, which are the
student and teacher areas. In the student area, the dashboard is interactive
and easy to navigate through. It shows the eight reading-comprehension and when
you click on one, it provides some activities that relate to the strategy. Each
activity provides a video that explains the strategy and how it looks like in
practice. The activities are easy to understand, and students will enjoy them. The
progressive question and answer format allows students to go back and answer
the questions based on further readings.
The
teacher area provides additional resources like detailed guides on the
activities the students will be working on. There is also the printable
activity text provided just in case the students cannot access the online
activity. Other than the activities that relate to the eight
reading-comprehension strategies, the site also provides multiple mini-lessons
that relate to the strategies. Other features on the website are the videos,
posters, and songs that fully explain the eight strategies. Using the website,
students can benefit greatly and improve their literacy skills at a young age.
The
activities are also organized by Common Core State Standards. The website
organizes it in a way where it will show what activities relate to what
specific standard. The website also conveniently allows teachers to download
and print pdf versions of all their online activities’ summaries, video
summaries, video teacher guides, and song lyrics. Overall, the website provides
everything needed for a reading-comprehension curriculum that can also include
multiple literacy skills.
