ILA Newsletter Weekly: Effective Literacy Website #7
Dr. M. Rivera
My
final effective literacy website that I will review will be Whooo’s Reading (https://www.whooosreading.org/.) This
website is more of a tool that teachers can use to get their students to help
them think critically about books that they have read. Students can share books
that they are currently reading, answer open-ended questions, write reviews for
the books and answer some comprehension questions. The website has an automatic
grading system that looks at the student responses and looks at the length and
how complex their answers are. As an incentive, students can earn coins from
completed activities and then use those coins to upgrade their avatars.
Whooo’s
Reading offers both free and paid for subscription. The teachers can add their
student roster onto Whooo’s Reading. Since it is a website, it is a
recommendation that students must have internet access in order to partake on
this type of activity. Teachers can monitor their student’s activities when it
comes to the books they have read and the questions that they have answered.
The recommended books is made easy for the teachers because they are organized
in Lexile Levels. They can also put in book recommendations for students if it
available in the Whooo’s Reading Library and they may also add book URL links.
As
a tool, this seems like a great one to encourage students to share books that
they are currently reading with their peers. It is one way to get students to
do pleasure reading through this kind of sharing so that they may share their
interests. Since it is website, this can
be a great tool to add on to our Online Mode of Learning platform. This website
also gives teachers preview of what books are popular that can be then
recommended to their students. Overall, I think this website is worth giving a
shot especially since we have Online as a model of learning. The website is a
great way to share books and encourage students to think more critically.
