Effective Literacy Website #7
Teen Ink (https://www.teenink.com/) is a website and national teen magazine that is
devoted entirely to the writings, art, photos, and forums of teenagers. For
over 31 years, teens have been given opportunities to publish their creative
work and opinions by Teen Ink. Issues such as love and family, school, current
events, and self-esteem are just a few of the issues that affect the lives of
teenagers. Students, aged 13-19, have submitted work to Teen Ink and more than
55, 000 teens have been published since 1989.
Teen
Ink is unique in that there are no staff writers or artists, and the website
depends completely on submissions from teenagers around the world for their
content. Teens have generated the most thoughtful and creative work in Teen
Ink. There are over 460,000 registered users of Teenink.com, and these numbers
continue to grow every day. Although the ownership of Teen Ink has changed a
few times, the mission of this website remains the same. That mission is
devoted to helping teens across the world to share their own voices while they
develop reading, writing, creative, and critical-thinking skills.
Currently,
there is a free subscription for the relaunch of the Teen Ink Magazine that
students can avail of. In the magazine, the work is also submitted by teens for
teens. There are book reviews, personal stories, and art included in the
magazine. This is another outlet for teens to share their passion for their
creative expression.
The
website and magazine are a great supplement for teachers’ curriculums, and they
use these resources to encourage students to write and create more often. Aside
from helping to improve teens’ reading and writing skills, the website and
magazine provides teens with a worldwide community of readers, writers, and
artists to learn from just like themselves. I highly recommend this website and
magazine for teachers in the secondary level, and hopefully, we can see the
next author or artist from these parts of the world to be published and
recognized.
