ILA Newsletter Project #4: Effective Literacy “Newsela”

Newsela is an educational platform that provides leveled crosses-curricular reading materials for students from elementary to high school. It provides informational contents and has standards to align with students learning skills.  It is there to help students optimize their learning and stir-up students’ interest in reading. Teachers can use the site to enrich their lessons and create engaging learning experiences. Newsela has many nonfiction text and some fictional resources that teachers may use to enhance their lessons. Newsela offers two account versions. There is a free account version with few basic features and a premium account with more features for reading.

The contents of Newsela never get old. New contents are being published each day across 20 or more genres. Using this website gives teachers updated resources and great stories for students to read. Resources are being provided on the site and educators have to just make the resources fitting to different skills and different learners. Learning using the contents form Newsela makes the learning authentic, accessible, active, and aligned. The accountability is held for teachers, students, and administrators.  Newsela contents are connected to learning activities that hold teachers accountable to implement. Students are too accountable for their work in the contests of Newsela. Administrators are accountable to safety and that materials are being provided to the classroom.

Having the three parties to be held accountable for learning will surely lead the way to success. When teachers are getting new and updated materials and or programs, they are the ones to figure out ways of implementing such things in the classrooms and outside the classrooms. Students are the ones responsible for finishing work and attaining certain skills through the help of parents and teachers. School administrators are to make sure that classrooms are getting their resources they need and that there is safety every day. Together, success will be accomplished with teachers, students, and the whole school community.
