O'lan Genevieve Rodillas: ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #1
AdLit (http://www.adlit.org) is a
website dedicated to adolescent literacy. This website offers useful multimedia
resources, tips to address and support literacy in middle school and high
school students. AdLit is funded by a grant from the National Education
Association. Its mission is to share literacy research and best-practice
information via the Internet to assist with adolescents who struggle with literacy
affected by low socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicity and disability.
Exploring
this website has so much to offer not only for educators, but for anyone who
would like to assist adolescents who struggle with literacy. AdLit is organized
into tabs that provide useful information about the organization, In the
Classroom, Books and Authors and Topics related to adolescent literacy.
In
the Classroom tab contains some noted information such as strategies and
Teaching English Learners. The strategies suggested are for both teachers and
parents to support what their students may need assistance in literacy.
Particularly, it showcases strategies before, during and after literacy
strategies to implement with your struggling students. It gives you background
information on the strategy, the benefits of using the strategy and how to use
these strategies in our lessons.
Another
aspect that arise when it comes to adolescent literacy are those who are
English learners. Presently our classrooms are more diverse, as students come
from multicultural backgrounds and come from households that do not speak
English as their first language. Literacy is a challenge when you are learning
a language that is not your native tongue. AdLit provides articles and useful
videos that give information and tips about teaching English Learners.
The
Books and Authors tab offers author interviews, a book finder and a diverse
books project, just to mention a few things found in the tab. The author interviews
are in video clip format so the students can learn more about their
perspective. The book finder is another neat tool that can look up books that
fit the categories that you may be looking for. The Diverse Books Project are
recommended books that touch on various topics from cultural, political,
historical and many more to pique the interest of students of various
backgrounds.
The
Topics tab presents more resources and articles that range from various
literacy topics. This tab contains information and resources about comprehension,
fluency, writing and motivation and engagement, just to mention a few. These
articles and videos provide information to gain more knowledge and suggestion
to apply with students who need help in particular areas of literacy.
AdLit
is a gold mine for educators as this website provides these useful articles and
resources to cater to a struggling student in literacy. I highly recommend this as an effective literacy website for anyone who would like to learn more about literacy and to apply
these resources with adolescents who have struggles in literacy.
