Effective Literacy Website #2
Storyline Online is an online platform that provides read-aloud for children. The website features famous actors and actresses as the storytellers reading the story. These oral readings are accompanied by creative illustrations that further adds to the reading experience for children. The website states, “Reading aloud to children has been shown to improve reading, writing and communication skills, logical thinking and concentration, and general academic aptitude, as well as inspire a lifelong love of reading” (2021). Therefore, the many read-alouds provided by this site is a powerful tool in enriching a teacher's teaching as well as a great resource for parents to use at home.
When first clicking into a video on Storyline Online, you are able to choose your preferred video player/browser: YouTube or TeacherTube. It's your choice in deciding which browser works best for you. Once you are able to view the video, you will be able to see the author of the book, the illustrator, and who is reading the book aloud. You will also see the run time and the suggested grade level for the use of the book. Knowing the run time and grade level is useful in planning your lesson and deciding if the story is right for your class or child.
Another great feature included with the read-alouds on StoryLine Online is that it includes activity guides. The guides have two versions: one for teachers and one for parents. In the teacher's guide, it provides a before reading and after reading section. It even provides different activities to link the story to different content areas such as reading, writing, social studies, and science. The parents guide provides fun activities that can be done at home. There are creative arts activities, physical activities, activities to enrich the educational aspect, as well as suggestions for field trip activities that parents can take their child on.
