ReadTheory is a program designed to help teachers increase students’ reading ability. The heart of the program is to provide a differentiated learning platform that addresses a student’s individual needs. It is used in thousands of school districts globally. Best of all, the program is free and easy to use.
First, you would have to set up an account on ReadTheory which can be as easy as signing in with your existing Google account. Next, you would need to create a class for your students to join. This can be done 2 ways: having students join with a class code which will create their account using their Google accounts or you could manually enter your student names and create their usernames and password. Once you’ve done this students can sign in and will need to take the pretest to place them at the proper reading level. After the pretest, students will be given reading material and questions at their current level. The program will track the students’ progress.
Great usage of these data points is that you can make adjustments and accommodation in the classroom to address your learner needs. You can see what skills your students are struggling in as a whole and create lesson pinpointing missing skills. Also, this data is great for any CSTs (Child Study Team) or IEP meetings.
Another great feature of ReadTheory is that there is a teachers lounge where you can access professional development articles which can help you enrich your teaching. Also, there are worksheets and lesson plans available targeting different reading skills; such as: central idea, characterization, inferences, point of view, summarizing, theme, tone, and vocab in context. Overall, ReadTheory offers teachers a free resource to help improve literacy.
