Effective Literacy Website #4
Starfall is a free online platform designed to teach children how to read. It focuses on learners from preschool to 3rd grade. The website states, “Starfall’s emphasis on phonemic awareness, systematic sequential phonics, and common sight words in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity has proven effective in teaching emergent readers.” The platform’s activities are aligned to Common Core State Standards and research based. The site breaks their platform into two sections: Pre-K-Kindergarten and 1st-3rd Grade.
The first section, Pre-K-Kindergarten, has different portals. It has ABCs, Learning to Read, It’s Fun to Read, Colors, Nursery Rhymes, and more. The Learning to read section first has the child learn the onset and rimes important to a reading. After completing the onset and rimes learning activity, it has the child read the story book. The story books in this program include multiple pages with pictures and a button that has the website read each section to the child. The reader for the website reads slowly and focuses on clear pronunciation which is important for emerging readers.
The second section, 1st-3rd Grade, has some of the same features as the first. Examples being Learning to Read, It’s Fun to Read, and I’m Reading. The addition to this section is that it has a Grade 1 English and Grade 2-3 English portal. In the grade 1 portal, it teaches subjects like What is a Noun and Producing a Sentence. The Grade 2-3 portal provides lessons in things like prefixes and end punctuation. Starfall is a great resource for teachers and parents to use to teach and motivate their emerging readers. On the site, there is a section called Parent-Teacher Center where educators and parents can learn more about the site and how to implement the resources properly to maximize the learning. This platform focuses on improving literacy and enriching the learning process for our emerging readers.
