Effective Literacy Website #3
BrainPOP is a learning platform that offers curriculum based content. It provides animated clips, games, interactive quizzes, and other learning resources. According to the website, “Its topics span Science, Social Studies, English, Math, Engineering & Tech, Health, and Arts & Music.” This online platform provides resources that help improve students’ literacy in multiple content. The more jargon and knowledge they optain in different content will improve a child’s literacy overall.
When clicking on a specific lesson, like clauses for example, you will find a variety of resources. Firstly, you will see a button that will show you the standards being taught as well as lesson ideas. Next, BrainPOP provides you with a short video clip that teaches the topic. From there students can complete different learning activities for the topic such as: taking a quiz, concept mapping, creating a video for the topic, worksheets, vocabulary, and games. Teachers can use this resource to integrate technology while enriching their teaching. The concept map feature is a great feature in improving literacy because it allows students to make connections and map out their thought process.
BrainPOP, unfortunately, is not a free resource. In order to fully access all resources on the platform, you will have to have a subscription. BrainPOP offers individual teacher subscriptions, but if you are able to get your school or district to subscribe the program will provide resources for different teachers across the contents.
