Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #2
IXL
(https://www.ixl.com/) is both a website and
app that provides thousands of activities, lessons, resources, and modules that
meet the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science
Standards (NGSS) for K-12 students. The website makes completing assignments and
activities fulfilling for the students. Every time the students get a question
correct, they earn points and ribbons. One they reach 100 points for a skill;
they can earn a virtual stamp. This method encourages the students to master as
much skills as they can.
The
questions and assignments for Language Arts focuses on grammar and vocabulary
skills. Other than Language Arts skills, there are also skills on Math,
Science, and Social Studies ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade.
You can access a lot of features without the need to create an account, but you
have access to individual reports once you create an account. Unfortunately, you
must pay to create an account. With the individual reports, you also get item
analysis, usage, and trouble spots that can help with differentiated instruction
for the students. The trouble spot report can quickly identify the students
that are struggling as well as the students that need extra help.
One
of the unique features of IXL is that when students sign in for the first time,
they take a diagnostic assessment. The results from the assessment will provide
a personalized “Recommendations Wall” for the student that lists future skills
for the to practice. The activities in IXL are like a drill-and-practice format,
but it provides feedback on how students can improve. Any questions they get
incorrect are explained in detail with explanations and examples. The
drill-and-practice and repetitive questions may not make students exited for
IXL, but the content, targeted practice, and ease of use benefit both the
students and teachers.
