IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website#1

 

            MagicBlox (https://magicblox.com/) is a free online reading site for kids. This site contains reading books for different reading levels. Before you can only access to this site from a computer, but now they created an app that children can install in their reading devices. They upload books for student at the age of 1 to 6 beginner levels, 6 to 9 intermediate levels, and 9 to 13 advance levels. The website contains different category of reading like classical, art, health, magazine and others. It also contains books with different features like illustrations, music, photos, chapters, narrations, and sound. This site encourages children to explore other culture or learn other language because it provides books in many languages. When you want to read books from French for example, you will select French under language.

This site is really interesting because we already know that the only thing that will motivate students to love reading is reading from their own interest.  It is very effective because you can choose your own category, features and language on the book that you want to read about and then choose the book. It shows how many pages of the book and if it is a new book or shows you the date when the book upload. When you select a book it will also gives you the key words from the reading text.

In addition, the website is effective for children who don’t like to read because they can follow their favorite adventure with text, chapter, and sounds like audio books with follow long narrative. This website will be very useful for our school because our books are outdated, and nowadays student like using technology. They can install this app and start reading books from this site.

With each videos, it has remarkable graphics along with upbeat songs that allows teaching more fun. To sign up, you can easily go to the website and create a username by entering your email address. This website has a free trial, and you can also pay for subscription that cost $67 a year for more videos for your students. Using the platform, Flocabulary, you can easily find videos that matches your classroom lessons that can be exciting and fun for the students.   International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project:  Effective Literacy Website #5 Story Place: The Children’s Digital Learning Library is an online literacy platform that focuses on building literacy for children in Preschool. This site offers digital storybooks that are animated. When you click into one of the stories, you will see a few expansion activities below. There are online activities for children to do as well as hands-on crafting activities that have printable templates for teachers or parents.  Included are videos that relate to concepts or ideas learned in the storybook. These videos are used to expand upon ideas learned in the story. Under each story, there is a reading list that relates to the theme of the story.
