Effective Literacy Website #4
PBS KIDS (https://pbskids.org/) is an educational site featuring kids’ favorite PBS
television show characters. This site is full of games, videos, and quests for
kids who are learning basic skills and are familiar with many of the characters
from shows such as Sesame Street and Curious George. PBS KIDS is one of the
simpler and safer first online experience for preschoolers. It encourages early
literacy skills, and parents are encouraged to sit next to their children as
they navigate through the site. Parents can also monitor their child’s
activities and receive updates with the site’s corresponding mobile app for
parents, PBS Kids Super Vision.
PBS KIDS is designed for children ages 4 and older.
There are basic lessons involving different characters with an easy-to-use
format and with voice-over instructions. The site is organized by show, such including Calliou
and Arthur, and aside from watching videos and playing games,
there are printable activities available for offline. Parents or educators can
help the children by choosing a certain character on the homepage wheel or
choosing a certain skill for them to work on such as letters, numbers, shapes,
Spanish, and so much more. Because of the variety of characters and activities
available, parents and educators can guide the children through the website to
help focus their enjoyment and skills needs as much as possible. This website
is highly recommended for preschoolers or those that need the extra help in
literacy, such as students from the outer islands who have never been exposed
to formal schooling.
