Effective Literacy Website #2
Newsela is a platform that contains instructional content that is engaging and accessible. It has integrated assessments that promote reading engagement and learning in every subject. The instructional content on Newsela includes topics that students care about, that are connected to the core curriculum, and are aligned to standards. The articles in this website are published at 5 reading levels, allowing access to every student in a class regardless of their reading abilities. There are thousands of articles accessible for younger readers because they are leveled specifically for students in grades 2-6.
The assessments on Newsela are
directed integrated into the articles which helps the students engage with the
content. As these assessments are done, teachers and school administrators are
given insights into the students’ activities resulting into more engaged
readers which are promoted as better learners.
The Newsela
Professional Learning Page is a PDF that gives an overview of the different
offerings for educators from Newsela. This file contains discussion on the certification
programs and professional learning sessions that educators can benefit from as these
are applicable, flexible, tailored, and confidence-boosting.
Unfortunately, Newsela changed its pricing structure from
a mostly free service to now a mostly subscription-based service. This pricing
started in the 2019-2020 school year. However, even as a non-paid subscriber,
the website can be valuable to the educator because there are still reading
comprehension quizzes and writing prompts and annotation features. Due to a lot
less content in the free version, Newsela is now likely a supplement to an
educator’s curriculum rather than a central component. If the educator opts for
the paid subscription or is fortunate enough to have a school or district
subscription, then they would have access to a range of the best leveled
reading materials for targeted intervention and differentiation, access to
articles that can be assigned to individuals or small groups, quizzes, and
other features only available in a paid subscription. Overall, this website
offers different options for paid and non-paid subscribers that still encourage
improving reading skills for all students across all curriculums.
