ILA Newsletter Project:
Effective Literacy Website #1
Reading
Rockets was created as a national public media literacy initiative that
offers information and resources focusing on how young readers learn to read,
the struggles of learning to read, and how caring adults can assist them. This
website contains research-based strategies to provide all stakeholders involved
in helping young children become strong and confident readers. The goal of this
site is to bring the reading research to life by spreading the word about
reading instruction. Parents and educators will benefit with the strategies that
“work” and can be understood and used by them.
Reading Rockets’ mission is to take research-based and
best-practice information, and going through television and the Internet, make
it available to as many people as possible. This is to promote reading for
young readers and instruction by parents and educators alike. From 2001 to
2012, this project was funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of
Education, Office of Special Education Programs. Other sources of funding came
from a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, The Poses Family
Foundation, the National Education Association, The Park Foundation, and even
an anonymous donor.
Through three major services (PBS television programs,
online services, and professional development opportunities), Reading Rockets
creates and disseminates free, evidence-based information about reading. These
are all free resources to teach children to read and help kids who struggle.
The site has hundreds of articles on teaching reading, classroom strategies,
in-classroom video, parent tips in 11 languages, interviews with authors, and
much more. The site also offers free professional development for teachers.
Reading Rockets is found on Facebook, Twitter,
YouTube, and Pinterest. Its presence in these social media platforms allow the
information of the importance of reading especially at a young age to spread
all over the nation and the world as well. Materials from the website is free
of charge for personal use and/or a small amount for classroom use as long as
credit is given to Reading Rockets and its authors.
